Barcelona Football Club humiliated Real Madrid with a 5-1 thrashing at the Camp Nou to go two points clear at the top.

FC Barcelona - 5 | Real Madrid - 1

Sensational has to be the word that aptly describe what transpired at the Camp Nou tonight. May be even that would not describe the feeling of each Barcelona fans now. How quickly things changed; a few weeks back we were struggling to impose ourselves in the league. Now we have opened up a two point lead at the top and produced two sensation displays back to back.

Once again it was Luis Saurez, who brilliantly led the attack in the absence of Messi with a stunning hat-trick. From struggling for goals in recent matches, he simply turned around the table now to score four in two.

Valverde gets Everything Right once Again

Ernesto Valverde for the second match in a row surprised everyone doing absolutely the right thing at the appropriate times. That's usually not that much expected from him! Strangely, I wrote a prophetic piece detailing my reasons for believing that Messi's Injury was a Good Chance for Valverde.

Now that has turned true, he looks absolutely at ease without Messi in pitch and like I wrote in that piece, there seems to a healthy competition going on among players to establish their place. Valverde, as expected, went with an unchanged side which started against Inter Milan. Rafinha after the brilliant performance against Inter was given another chance and did well too.

FC Barcelona Started the Game with Total Control

Barcelona took control of the game fully from the start. Real Madrid has been struggling recently and that was in full display in the first half. Nacho started as Right back but was getting destroyed by Alba with every move forward. Then in truth, Bale never helped him much. It was no surprise to see the first goal coming from that wing. Arthur lifted the ball over to the left wing, releasing Alba and he controlled it brilliantly and raced to box. He then did brilliantly holding off his pass and simply spot Coutinho in the middle, who scored the opener.

Real Madrid was totally killed after that opener and they simply vanished from the field. It was heartening to see our young boys totally boss Real Madrid players on the field. Madrid's chances came mainly from long range shots which Ter Stegan was easily able to deal with. Around the half-hour mark, Saurez increased the lead to 2-0 after Saurez was brought down in the box by Varane. He converted the penalty with absolute ease.

Despite the total control, Barcelona failed to increase the lead in the rest of half. And the culprit, in that case, was Saurez, who made absolutely wrong choices in dealing with two open chances. And we were almost made to pay dearly for those nonsensical decisions by Saurez.

Real Madrid Changed the Approach in Second Half

It was a different Real Madrid which emerged after the break with Vasquez coming in a right back. The introduction of a more attacking winger changed the tempo of the match and we were struggling completely. Isco and Marcelo combined together to create their first goal. And it felt that it was just a matter of time before they equalized, and they almost did by hitting the post.

Valverde had to react and he reacted superbly. First, he brought in Semedo for Rafinha and that brought a better control. But it was the introduction of Dembele which changed the course of the match completely. The French men pace meant he was a huge threat and we saw that minutes later of his introduction. He received the ball in the midfield and set on the counter. His pace meant the defenders had to back off, that created the space which allowed him to pass to Roberto who sent in a cross which Saurez brilliantly directed to goal with a stunning header.

That killed any resistance from Real Madrid and they were available for being torn apart, and tear apart what Barca did! Saurez completed the hat-trick with a brilliant finish once again off Roberto assist. And in dying minutes of the macth Vidal made it 5-1 scoring his first goal for Barcelona.

Without any doubt this was the best performance by the team in the season. More importantly, it was the performance of the Coach which actually would have improved the confidence of the team. Now it's time to build up the team so that we remain really well positioned when Messi returns.
