  • Spain's alternative playing style fail big time against Netherlands
  • Spain needs to win their rest of two match and hope other results go their way to qualify

No one expected such a result; forget the thrashing. The worst many of us was expected was a a tight defeat which could have been the result of the Dutch seizing the important moments. But this was hiding in every way. It was so surprising to see a team which looked pretty assuring in the first half to just wilt down completely in the second half. Had it not be for some late saves by Casillas, the scoreline would have looked even worse. The line-up looked brilliant for the Spanish but it never combined from the beginning. And it all went down hill once David Silva failed to increase the lead to 2-0 after an exquisite through ball from Iniesta put him through. Dutch equalised soon and that momentum they multiplied and carried in to the second half big time.

The Spanish side lined with five Barcelona players in the line up. But still they struggled to find any rhythm in their passing football. It is safe to say that Del Bosque's experiment with Diego Costa failed in every aspect. He is a striker who will fit the Atletico Madrid style of play rather than the Spanish tiki-taka. Many will say this result show that tiki-taka might be dead. But let be honest, if Spain lacked anything it was the famous tiki-taka. They were playing a little more open style of football and that left them open for counter attack.

This result leave Spain's qualifying chance on the brink. Even if they win the rest of their matches they may still end up not making out of the group because of the goal difference. But that will only come into picture if they get past this thrashing. Their next match is with Chile and that is a "Life or Death" situation for the Spanish. Anything other than a victory will make sure that they will pack the bags early that everyone expected.

How will Del Bosque correct this situation? He may have to go for an all attacking line and may start using the false-9. At least that will give him some control. Chile who won the match against Australia in emphatic fashion, that puts them in a comfortable position where they can play for a comfortable draw against Spain. That means Spain has to force the issue. Regardless of whom they select, they may have to start with Pedro. And it also begs the question whether adding Juanffran into defense would be better than Azpilicueta. They need to return back to their rooots to qualify from this group now. Even in 2010 World Cup, they lost their first match but what makes it worse this time is the extent of the defeat.
