Some careers are written in history; others are scripted like Hollywood blockbusters. Lionel Messi’s international journey had it all — heartbreak, redemption, glorious triumph and a finale worthy of the grandest stage. But as the curtain falls, one tantalising question remains: Are we witnessing the end of an era, or is there one last twist in the greatest footballing saga of our time?

Football has given us legends, fairytales and finales etched in eternity. Yet, few stories have unfolded with the cinematic grandeur of Lionel Messi’s international odyssey. A tale woven with heartbreak and hope, shattered dreams and glorious redemption, it was a blockbuster in which the hero stumbled, rose, fought back and conquered the world. And now, as the curtain descends on this extraordinary saga, one question lingers in the air: Have we witnessed the final act of football’s greatest masterpiece, or is the world still waiting for one last, magical sequel?

Lionel Messi and Argentina: A Bitter-Sweet Love Story

Lionel Messi’s love affair with Argentina was never a straightforward romance. It was a relationship repeatedly overshadowed by forces beyond his control, burdened by expectations he never asked for and haunted by a past he could never escape. For much of his international career, Messi found himself caught in an identity paradox — an Argentine by birth and heart, yet labelled a Spaniard by many of his countrymen and, perhaps, an Argentine by much of Spain. But if there was ever any doubt about where his heart truly belonged, Messi put it to rest when he turned down the opportunity to represent Spain. His allegiance was never up for negotiation. Argentina was home, and Argentina was where he wanted to make history.

Yet, for Messi, wearing the Albiceleste was about far more than representing a nation. It meant living in the shadow of a towering figure whose presence transcended football itself — Diego Maradona. In Argentina, Maradona was not merely a footballer; he was an emotion, a national symbol and a demigod whose exploits at the 1986 World Cup had secured him a permanent place in the country's sporting mythology. He stood alone atop Argentina’s footballing pantheon, an almost untouchable figure against whom every successor would inevitably be measured.

Messi, with his extraordinary gifts, seemed destined to inherit that throne. His dazzling footwork, impossible vision and almost supernatural command of the ball made him the natural heir to Maradona’s kingdom. For millions of Argentinians, he was the answer to a prayer — the chosen one who would restore the nation to the summit of world football. But what initially appeared to be a blessing soon became an unbearable burden. Messi was not simply expected to win; he was expected to recreate Maradona, to deliver the same ecstasy and, in doing so, somehow prove himself worthy of a legacy that had become almost sacred.

And perhaps, in the cruelest twist of this footballing tragedy, the gods of Argentine football seemed unwilling to surrender their old favourite's throne.

I have often wondered whether Maradona, despite all his flaws and controversies, remained the favoured son of football's fickle gods. How else could one explain the seemingly endless succession of heartbreaks that followed Messi and Argentina when glory appeared tantalisingly within reach? Three consecutive major final defeats — the 2014 World Cup and the 2015 and 2016 Copa América finals — seemed almost scripted to deny him the one thing he craved most. The cruelest part was that Messi had already given Argentina everything he could, yet the ultimate reward continued to elude him.

Surely, one Copa América triumph before his emotional international retirement in 2016 would not have been too much to ask? But even that modest wish seemed beyond the reach of a man whose genius had conquered almost every other frontier of football.

Perhaps it was simply the cruel poetry of sport: the greatest talents are not always rewarded when they deserve it most. Or perhaps, in the mythology of Argentine football, the gods were not yet ready to see another king crowned.

For Messi, the road to immortality would have to be longer, lonelier and infinitely more painful than anyone could have imagined.

Messi’s Career: A Masterpiece Scripted by the Almighty!

Sometimes, one cannot help but wonder whether Lionel Messi’s extraordinary life story was scripted by the Almighty Himself. How else does one explain this remarkable transformation — from a man ridiculed by his own countrymen, accused of lacking commitment and questioned over his loyalty, to a national treasure whose name is now synonymous with Argentina itself? Today, Messi is no longer merely a footballer representing his country. He is an emotion, a national obsession and the undisputed darling of a nation that would stand united behind him in a heartbeat. The very people who once questioned his allegiance now worship the ground he walks on. Few stories in sporting history have witnessed such a profound transformation of love, faith and acceptance.

Perhaps the turning point came in 2016, when Messi, devastated by yet another international final defeat, announced his retirement from international football. His decision sent shockwaves across Argentina. But his absence also forced the nation to confront an uncomfortable truth: just how much did this extraordinary little man bring to the team? For Messi, returning meant subjecting himself to the same emotional torment that had repeatedly broken his heart. Yet, he came back. Not for personal glory, not for redemption in the eyes of his critics, but for the one dream that had remained painfully elusive — to see Argentina crowned champions once again. Slowly, the nation began to understand what had always been staring it in the face. This was a man willing to endure heartbreak after heartbreak for the love of his country.

That realisation marked the beginning of a love affair that would eventually transcend football itself. But before the fairytale could unfold, there were more chapters of anguish to endure. The 2019 Copa América was another bitter episode in Argentina’s turbulent journey, a tournament that left Messi frustrated and the nation searching for answers. The familiar chorus of criticism returned, with calls for his head resurfacing, albeit in somewhat muted tones. Once again, the greatest footballer of his generation found himself carrying the burden of a nation that demanded everything from him while struggling to understand what he had already given.

As I have argued earlier, there was something almost poetic about the way Messi’s international career unfolded during Diego Maradona’s lifetime. The romantic in me has often wondered whether Argentine football's mythology itself was reluctant to see another figure overshadow its greatest icon. How else could one interpret the cruel succession of failures that followed Messi, only for Argentina’s fortunes to change so dramatically after Maradona’s passing? Of course, football offers more rational explanations — the evolution of the squad, tactical improvements, collective resilience and the contributions of Lionel Scaloni and his coaching staff. Yet, for the romantics and devoted Maradona admirers, the story carries a different meaning: perhaps the footballing heavens had decreed that no one would surpass the Golden Boy while he still walked among mortals.

And then came the moment when Argentina’s collective consciousness began to shift. With Maradona gone, the nation seemed to embrace Messi with an intensity that had been building for years. The search for a new saviour was finally over. Perhaps Argentina was beginning to understand that Messi was never destined to erase Maradona’s legacy or dethrone its beloved Golden Boy. He was destined to stand alongside him. Not as a replacement, but as another immortal figure in the pantheon of Argentine football — a genius whose greatness would complement, rather than diminish, the legend of Diego.

The rest, as they say, is history.

The 2021 Copa América triumph in Brazil was the moment the dam finally broke. When Argentina defeated Brazil at the Maracanã, Messi did more than lift his first major international trophy with the senior national team. He released a nation from years of pent-up frustration, shattered expectations and unfulfilled dreams. The relief was palpable, the celebrations extraordinary and the love that poured forth almost impossible to put into words. The boy who had once been asked to prove his loyalty had finally delivered the prize his country craved. From that night onwards, Messi’s relationship with Argentina entered an entirely different dimension. Every appearance became an occasion, every touch a celebration and every goal another chapter in an ever-expanding legend.

But if the Copa América was redemption, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was the culmination of a story that seemed almost too extraordinary to be real.

One could almost imagine the opening match against Saudi Arabia having been written into the script by the footballing gods themselves. Argentina arrived in Qatar as one of the favourites, riding an extraordinary unbeaten run, only to be stunned by a defeat that threatened to derail the entire campaign. Suddenly, the nation that had arrived dreaming of glory found itself staring into the abyss. The fairytale appeared to be unravelling before it had truly begun.

Yet, perhaps that was precisely how this story was always meant to unfold. Messi and Argentina had never been strangers to adversity. They had stumbled before, suffered before and watched their dreams crumble before. This time, however, there was something different about them. The captain was older, wiser and more determined than ever. Around him stood a squad that appeared willing to run through walls for their leader, a group united by a singular purpose and driven by an almost unbreakable collective belief.

What followed was a campaign worthy of the grandest sporting epic. Messi mesmerised the world with performances that blended genius with grit, artistry with authority and individual brilliance with collective sacrifice. Argentina navigated one nerve-shredding encounter after another, surviving moments that would have broken lesser teams. Through it all, Messi remained the heartbeat of the side, carrying his nation’s hopes while inspiring his teammates to believe that the impossible was within reach.

Perhaps the Almighty had indeed scripted this extraordinary tale. Perhaps the heartbreaks were necessary to make the triumph sweeter, the failures essential to give the redemption its meaning, and the long wait indispensable to make the final embrace unforgettable.

Or perhaps this is simply the magic of football — a game in which even the most gifted must suffer before they can achieve immortality.

And perhaps, the ultimate poetic justice lies in the timing of it all. Forced out of FC Barcelona in 2021 after more than two decades of extraordinary service, Messi had to endure a painful farewell, with Joan Laporta defending the club’s decision to put the institution above any individual. Yet, just as Barcelona lost its greatest-ever player, Messi began scripting the most glorious chapter of his international career, winning the Copa América in 2021 and the World Cup in 2022. Barcelona gave him the stage to become a legend, but Argentina gave him the ending he deserved. While Barcelona justified his departure, Messi let his football do the talking.

In hindsight, there is a certain poetic justice in Messi’s failure to win an international trophy with Argentina during his Barcelona years. Especially in light of the stones that have been thrown at him since his departure, one cannot help but wonder whether the club’s hierarchy ever truly appreciated the magnitude of the genius they had in their midst.

Whatever the circumstances, Lionel Messi’s journey with Argentina has become far more than a story of trophies and records. It is a story of a nation's doubts transformed into devotion, of a footballer who refused to abandon his dream, and of a love affair that survived every heartbreak imaginable.

If this was the Almighty’s script, then the 2022 World Cup was its grandest, most magnificent finale — the moment Lionel Messi finally received the ending his extraordinary story deserved.
