Pep Guardiola's any hope of having a dream start with the Barca fans would have ended with this draw. Towards the end of the match FC Barcelona fans took out their white scarves to show their displeasure; but its not clear to whom it was aimed - the players, the manager or the president. Guardiola had promised a change in attitude and he instilled that with dropping some of major players. As I mentioned in build up to this match, he chose to drop Henry from the squad and have Messi on the bench. But the surprising selsction was the selection of Sergio Busquets ahead of Iniesta. It was a kind of gamble which paid off. Guardiola started with Abidal who had a much better game than Numancia,Pique, Puyol and Alves in front of Valdes. Keita, Xavi and Busquests formed the midfield. Whereas Eto, Hleb and Pedro formed the attacking trio. Eto again had a below average night and it must be questioned whether he has used all his resources to please the Manager. If it has, then Guardiola is the one to blame.

It was Hleb who was eager to make the most of the oppurunity presented to him by Pep early on. In the 5th minute Hleb send a delightful pass into the box, but none of the Barcelona players were present to make the most of it. In the 15th minute Hleb combined well with Keita to cross back to Xavi, but Santander defender Colsa intercepted it at the nick of time. In the 18th minute Pedro's low shot was comfortably saved by Keeper Tono. In the 29th minute Keita's long range effort eas comfortably saved by Goal Keeper. In the 39th minute Iniesta was brought in place of an injured Hleb. Hleb suffered a foul and has sprained the ligament of his left ankle; early reports suggests he could be out for three weeks. The first half ended without anymore significant events.

FC Barcelona started to take the initiative in the second half. Just thirty seconds into the half Alves almost gave Barca the lead when his clever chip hit the bar with keeper Tono beaten. In the 54th minute the referee overlooked a genuine penalty for FC Barcelona. Iniesta was brought down in the penalty box by Pinillos and looked like a genuine penalty to me. In the 55th minute Xavi shoots wide after a neat exchange of passes in the left. In the 57th minute Tono saves a pedro shot at point blank range. Keita gave the ball to Iniesta on the left with a clever flick, Iniesta squared it back to pedro but his tremendous shot was saved somehow by Tono. In the 59th minute Messi was brought in for Keita. In the 67th minute Messi free kick was saved by Goal Keeper. The next mnute saw a hapless FC Barcelona attack throwing up everything on Santander, first Tono pulled up another save from point blank from Eto, then alves shot from rebound was blocked again by the defender. This was a great spell of FC Barcelona pressure and gave fruit when Barca won a penalty when an Alves cross was handled by Christian. Messi stepped in to put FC Barcelona ahead in the 69th minute.

Then it was back to the typical displa of Barca's lack of concentration after the goal. Barca players gave away the ball too cheaply in the end have to concede a never existing free kick in the 76th minute. Santander equalised from the free kick which was taken by Garay but was deflected by Pereira. How can Pereira walk like that into the middle of the box without getting picked up? In the 82nd minute Puyol was taken off to bring on Bojan. These kind of crazy thing usually Rijkaard used to do. tehre is no sense in taking off a accomplised Centre Back to bring on an attacker when it is clear that Abidal is not on top of his game. This almost gave the lead to Racing twice but only for Valdes to closed down with desperate intervention.

Barcelona did put up a vastly improved performance; especially considering the fact that Pep had his boys with him for very less time. FC Barcelona had more than 75 percent of possesion but never had any end product to justify that. Pedro and Busquets were a revelation. Iniesta played really well. Barca needs to keep up the good work. But as I mentioned in one of my post earlier Watch Out, Pep Barcelona still have the inability to convert anything from corner. We had nine corners but never created a decent chance from those. Pep needs to seriously look into it. Secondly Pep needs to encourage his players to rush forward, in many occasions geniuine goal scoring crosses were wasted because there were not enough personals inside the box.

After one week of international duties, FC Barcelona stars are back in Nou Camp today to take on Racing Santander. With the shock defeat in the season's opener from Numancia, Guardiola would be hoping for a serious comeback from the side. One more sloppy performance would see the fans viciously vying for his head. Racing who had a much better night with a 1-1 draw against FC Barcelona could be coming all out in this encounter. Last season Barcelona could muster up a win with a solitary goal from Henry. Guardiola has announced a 20 men squad consisting of Valdes, Pinto, Puyol, Alves, Pique, Abidal, Sylvinho, Touré Yaya, Busquets, Keita, Gudjohnsen, Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro, Víctor Sánchez, Henry, Bojan, Hleb, Eto'o, Messi. But if Sport.es is to be believed Guardiola has already left out Henry and Sylvinho from the 20 member squad. Now this is quite surprising after Guardiola himself saying that Henry will find his form back and also taking into consideration about the fact that Messi may not start in the eleven.

Messi, who was criticized by Maradona for being selfish and greedy, can only be expected to start from the bench after arriving late from International duty. Guardiola is expected to put faith in Abidal again as he has no other option, if Sylvinho is ruled out. Abidal can be expected to form alliance with captain Puyol, Pique and Alves in the defense. The midfield option baffles me, but most probably would remain unchanged with Xavi, Iniesta and Toure. In that case Bojan, Hleb and Eto should take charge upfront. Another option is slotting Keita/Gudjonsen in place of Iniesta in midfield and moving Iniesta upward to the left.

Rijkaard's two acquisition from the English Premier League was aimed at providing a genuine back up for the club's perennial poacher Samuel Eto. In the first case, that is arrival of Eidur Gudjonsen Rijkaard managed to upset Samuel Eto. In Henry's case it did upset Ronaldinho more than Samuel Eto. I am not stating here that Rijkaard brought these gentlemen to unsettle Eto. Eto was on all occasion one of Rijkaard's favourite; but these moves indeed did upset him. But very soon everyone understood clearly that these Gentleman cannot play a strikers role. Hnery's acquisition baffles everone as he prefers to play as a second striker or in the wide left. The wide left option was filled by Ronaldinho at that time and Henry could only be expected to play a second fiddle to him.

But these all are things in the past. Ronaldinho has moved to A C Milan since then and FC Barcelona have made a series of acquisition to strengthen the squad. Keita, Pique, caceres, Alves all joined the new Barca of Guardiola. But the question in everyone's mind would be - "Is that enough for Barca?" Mr.Txiki has indicated that FC Barcelona essentially needs to strenghtenn the far left position with the departure of Ronaldinho. Arshavin, Silva etc were discussed as a possible signing to cover that void. But my firm belief is that the void which was left was at the front of the formation. Simply put we don't have anyone to look up to in that substitute bench as a replacement for Eto. There is no one who can be called a genuine centre striker. Bojan is nearest we have in that position; but then he is too young and inexperienced to handle the role alone. If Eto is able to remain injury free for the majority of the season, FC Barcelona may not even find the need for a replacement. But in these hectic schedule that could be like asking too much. Bojan needs his time to learn the full aspect of the game. If you look at the squad we have replacement for almost all the position baring Centre Striker and Right Back. Atleast in Puyol we can have a make shift RB who can do the job atleast 50% of the time. But we canot ask the same to anyone in that Centre Striker role. Henry is no good and looks much more comfortable in far left; Gudjonsen looks more comfortable in midfield; Messi, his position is far right and there is no sense in making a move to centre of the attacking formation. A Pavylichenko or a Berbatov would not have hurt; but then atleast till the mid season transfer market opens we cannot expect a decent centre striker. For that to happen, the management should change their Transfer Policy. They should concentrate on the best player they can buy for that position, not the best star they can buy for the club. We really have enough stars already.

The second round of the international stopping is almost over and here are some results involving Barcelona players. First, to my favourite national side - Argentina. Argentina was robbed of a win by last minute goal by Peru's Johan Fano. This is the third consecutive draw for Basile's kids. He may have to take note of this as they are going the same "Barcelona Way", with lots of possesion but not much shots on goal. Lionnel Messi had a forgettful night. Argentina who controlled most of the game went ahead with a Cambiasso header in the 84th minute. But the Argentinian hearts were shattered in the last minute of injury time when Fano found the net from a wonderful Vargas pass. Now its proves that phrase right - "It ain't over, till it's over". Argentina lies in the third postion behind Paraguay and Brazil; they should not have any problem in qualifying and may be can top the group also. But it's better to address these small problem as early as possible. It is also surprising why Di Maria wasn't given any playing time in this match. Martin Caceres's Uruguay was also held to a golless draw by Ecuador. Caceres featured in the starting eleven. Uruguay lies in the fifth position.

Coming to Europe, Iceland suffered a 2-1 defeat in the hands of Scotland at home. Scotland went ahead in the 18th minute from a Kirk Broadfoot goal. Barry Robson doubled the lead in the 59th minute; Gudjonsen grabbed the consolation goal for Iceland from the penalty spot. With this victory Iceland lies in the bottom of table. Hleb in contrast to Gudjonsen had a wonderful night with scoring in a 3-1 win against Andorra. Belarus went ahead in the 36th minute from Verkhovstov's Goal. Andorra's Marc Pujol equalised in the 66th minute, but Rodionov and Hleb's Goal gave Belarus a comfortable victory. Belarus lies third behind England and Ukraine. Meanwhile, France got back to track with a 2-1 victory over Serbia. Thierry Henry along with Anelka scored for France. Spain comfortabley destroyed Armenia with a score line of four to nothing. Iniesta, Xavi and Puyol started in the game in which Bojan was introduced in the 65th minute in place of Cazorla. David Villa scored twice along with Capedevila and Senna to make it 4-0 against hapless Armenians.

The first leg of the world cup qualifiers are over. Here are some results in which Barcelona players were involved. The first and the most important has to be Argentina - Paraguay clash. Paraguay were the leaders in the South American qualifying group. Argentina despite their star power and majority of attack could only drew up with Paraguay. Paraguay went ahead with a Heinze bizarre own goal , while Messi who had a better second half set up Ken to score Argentina's equaliser. Undoubtedly Mascherano was the best player on the ground in that tie in which Manchester United forward Tevez saw red card for a twoo footed challenge. Argentina have so much to worry from that tie apart from the result as their Goal Keeper Roberto ABBONDANZIERI was taken out injured. But whatever there are signs of a new star being born - Angel Di Maria.

Martin Caceres was in the substitute bench for Uruguay's match against Colombia. He never got a chance to play as Uruguay saw off the Colombian challenge with a goal from Sebastian Eguren. Another new signing Keita didn't had a great night as their team went down to Congo from a Wilfrid Endzanga goal. Mali with a star cast of Keita, Diarra and Sissoko was expected to beat Congo. Mali still leads the group with 9 points but if Chad is able to beat Sudan then things will become extremely exciting. Ivory Coast was held onto a draw by Mozambique. Kone scored for Ivory Coast in the 48th minute, Miro equalised for Mozambique within four minutes. Ivory Coast lies in the top so could consider it as a good result. Else where Cameroon minus Eto defeated Cape Verde Islands after coming back from a goal down to score a 2-1 victory. Cameroon already has qualified for the next stage.

In Europe there were some surprises; the biggest of all was the French sides defeat to Austria. Austria demolished France with a 3-1 victory thanks to a Mexes own goal and another two fromAufHauser and Ivanschitz(pen). France may still make it through as it lies in a pretty easy group. But performances of this nature will not help them. Mean while, David Villa saved Spain's face with a 57th minute goal. The European Champions had four Barcelona players - Xavi, Puyol and Iniesta in the eleven and Bojan on the substitute bench. Bojan have to still wait to make his much awaited playing debut. Eidur Gudjonsen scored against Noway in a 2-2 draw. Belarus was beaten by Ukraine with a injury time penalty from Schevchenko. Aleksander Hleb started in the playing eleven.

After the acquisition by Abu Dhabi United Group, Manchester City joins the latest to enter the club of rich owners (let's call them the Million Dollar Clubs). The group not only includes the clubs which started or looking to achieve greatness after their high profile takeover (Manchester city, Chelsea etc) but also the ones which have been more successful in terms of championship (Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, ManU etc). The supporters of these historical clubs are bound to oppose these takeovers questioning their morality. But more than the moral side; the actions of these big historical clubs are the one which makes these acquisition legitimate. They/their fans never had any problems in going in for any players in any part of the world but suddenly their moral sense rises when one of the newly rich clubs takes the same path. It is same as United States and United Kingdom asking Russia to respect Sovereign Borders of respective countries.
