In the last few seasons alone, we have seen Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona win the league, each with very strong sides who looked like they would go on to dominate for some time. Thankfully, soccer isn’t that predictable, with all of these sides having experienced dips in form.

Barça before the second half of the season: Cautious optimism at the Camp Nou

Just one win in December! And with 3: 2 against Kellerkind Elche, they were actually quite happy. Hardly any club in the Primera División in Spain longed for the winter break as much as FC Barcelona. The "returnees" and a few new signings are now hoping for a good start into the new year.

It was already clear to everyone in the summer that after the fundamental upheaval at FC Barcelona (including Messi's departure!) this season, it was hardly a question of playing for the championship.

It is fair to say that 2021 will not go down as one that Barcelona fans look back fondly on. There has been chaos and farce behind the scenes – and the performances at the Camp Nou have not always been that much different.

We lost possibly the greatest player there has ever been due to internal and financial problems - and have recently crashed out of the Champions League at the group stage for the first time in nearly 20 years. We could be forgiven for thinking that this season should be written off. But there is still half of it to go – and there are still trophies to be won.
