Messi playing against AC Milan

"Genius, is the capacity to see ten things where the ordinary man sees one. - Ezra Pound"

When FC Barcelona step out tonight to face AC Milan at the Camp Nou, there will be more attention spread on Lionel Messi's individual performance than team's. That's the price Lionel Messi had to pay for being a Genius in an ordinary World. By his own standards Lionel Messi is going through a crisis of enormous proportion (so says the Press). It's been three match since Lionel Messi has officially found the back of net, something of a rarity nowadays. Barca coach has officially declared that he is getting tired of answering questions regarding Messi's form; so everyone expect a big answer from the little Argentinian tonight. Is Lionel Messi playing poorly? That's a question no one is ready to answer in this whole drama going on.

As per German Sport Newspaper "Bild", FC Barcelona has reached a pre-contract agreement with Borussia Mönchengladbach keeper Marc-André ter Stegen. Marc-André ter Stegen has been under Barca managements radar the moment Victor Valdes announced his intentions of leaving the club. Even though the club is still trying to retain Valdes' service, especially after his series of recent heroics. The chances of that happening is pretty slim as Valdes has ruled out extending his stay. There has been a host of goal keepers who has been linked with Barca recently, the last being Ben Foster. But Marc-André ter Stegen was always in prime position being the firm favorite of Sporting Director, Andoni Zubizarreta.

Everyone expected him to be overawed by the atmosphere that only a clash between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, but someone forgot to tell him all that. Neymar's first clasico was the best match he has played in a Barca shirt so far. He scored on and created the other to round off a brilliant individual night. Martino went with the best eleven available to him. The first eleven had Valdes, Alves, Pique, Mascherano, Adriano, Busquets, Iniesta, Xavi, Cesc, Messi and Neymar. The bench featured Pinto, Montoya, Puyol, Song, Pedro, Alexis and Sergi Roberto. Real Madrid went with more or less expected line-up - Lopez, Carvajal, Varane, Pepe, Marcelo, Ramos, Modric, Khedira, Bale, Ronaldo, and Di Maria. Ramos was deployed as a midfield enforcer.

Messi and Pedro celebrating Pedro's Goals against Rayo Vallecano

Barca continued with their excellent start to the season with 4-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano. Usually a 4-0 victory would be described as a thrashing. But not this one. This was even for most of the parts, the difference was our strikers were able to cash on the chances at the correct time. The match was to an extend an exhibition of how fragile our defense was, it was understandable as there were some changes which exposed them a bit.Martino continued with his rotation policy, this time Montoya finds a place in the starting line-up instead of Dani Alves. The back four for this outing was Montoya, Mascherano, Pique and Adriano. The midfield trio also saw the rotation with Song finding a place in starting eleven; a rare start along with Cesc and Xavi. The front three was Pedro, Messi and Neymar, more or less expected.

Another Lionel Messi hat-trick gave Barca the perfect start to the UEFA Champions League 2013-14 season. Sometimes we take this guy for granted; then it's undertsandable when someone scores at the rate like him.

Adversity reveals genius, prosperity conceals it. - Horace

In the end the Little Genius on the Pitch made the big difference. It was the 93rd minute, the fans were losing hope but still called for a last push, the players almost gave up, Barca has conjured up a way to give up a healthy two goal lead, many fellow cules switched off their TV, I almost did till I saw the determination of Lionel Messi; so I decided to wait for the final whistle and that was the best decision I made for some time. Let's be honest, had it not been for Lionel Messi we would be sitting and thinking how we managed to end up losing two points. In a way that's cruel on other players, for most of the match most of them were better than the Argentinian. I don't think we have seen Messi playing this crap in some time. It was horrible to watch him in the first half, constantly losing possession, every attempted mazy run getting blocked, over hitting deliveries; it wasn't the Lionel we knew! On the contrary the newcomer Neymar simply majestic, he was terrorising any player defending on the left; at times they simply gave up; he was simply magical. But in the end had it not been for the Argentinian his whole hard work would have gone to waste.

Ronaldinho against Real Madrid

Is there any better way to kill time when the players are away on International break? Don't think so. Ronaldinho's majestic performance earned him a standing ovation at the Bernebeu, something only repeated for Maradona previously.

"Non-performance can always be explained away" - Harold S. Geneen

Andoni Zubizarreta's contract at Barca will be extended by two years till the end of June 2016. The contract would have ended at the end of this season, but unfortunately it also had the option to extend it for further two years; had the club been impressed by his work. And now the club is looking to reward Zubizarreta's performance, which involves nothing other than being confused at the state of affair with two additional years. Then it comes as no surprise to anyone who follows Rosell's policies. Andoni Zubizarreta in simple words is a great servant for the master, and is been rewarded for that - his loyalty. His performance as the the Sporting Director reached his pinnacle this transfer window with the club looking absolutely clueless and desperate. The club simply resembled a bad joke in the transfer window, only to be outdone by David Moyes and Company.

A first half hat-trick from FC Barcelona's little Argentinian magician, Lionel Messi helped in edging past a resolute Valencia at the Mestalla. This was the first hat-trick of Messi in the season and we only had to wait five official games for it. All five goals of the match came in the first half, with Valencia hitting twice only in the injury time. In my FC Barcelona vs Valencia preview, I did write about how tough our previous visits to Mestalla have been. This one was no different with the rhythm swinging to and forth throughout the match. It was real end to end stuff, something we all expected and in the end these three points would feel pretty vital. We did have our negatives from the match, especially with Busquets injury. But it could work to our benefit as he could be left out of the National duties. Let's wait!

Sensational hat-trick by Messi secured Barca all three points at Mestalla. The five goal thriller had a breath taking first half in which all the goals were made.

Cesc Fabregas against Velncia

FC Barcelona's last visit to Mestalla ended with a 1-1 draw with both goals coming in the first half. Watch the highlights from that match to see how tough this visit is gonna be.

FC Barcelona vs Valencia Preview

Barca will play their third match in the 2013-14 La Liga season tomorrow night at the Mestalla. There is no need to say that it's going to be a tough trip; Barca fans have always considered the trip to Mestalla a very tough one, especially after Guardiola took over. No other team have managed to stifle our playing style like the Valencian players have done, that too consistently. Our last five visits to Mestalla in La Liga has seen us winning once and drawing the rest of four times. But never consider those draws as boring affairs, they were the most entertaining draws one could watch and all of them had goals in it too. Our last visit to Valencia ended in a 1-1 draw, we had to thank Valdes in saving us that day with some brilliant saves. Incidentally Valdes has been saving our skin in the last couple of matches and he may have to do it again tomorrow night.

For those who are a bit worried by us getting in to the Group of Death, let's look back to that brilliant performance against Milan.

Barca has been drawn in to what undoubtedly could be termed as the "Group of Death" in 2013-14 UEFA Champions League Group stage. FC Barcelona has been drawn along with AC Milan, Ajax FC and Celtic in Group H in the draw. The Milan clash has become a regular even in the Europe fixture. For the last two seasons we have been playing them regularly. In the 2011-12 season we were drawn with them, that time also in Group H. Last season one of our best performances came against Milan at the Camp Nou, but then the first leg exposed all our weaknesses also. Quite a tough debut for Tata Martino! There are some interesting draw in other groups also. Another tough group is the Group F with Arsenal, Dortmund, Marseille and Napoli. Our arch-rivals are in a comparatively easy group with Juventus, Galatasaray and Copenhagen keeping them company. The other Spanish team Real Soceidad has a difficult task with Manchester United, Shaktar Donetsk and Bayer Leverkusen in their group. Atletico Madrid meanwhile is in a better proposition having to face Porto, Zenit and FC Austria Vienna.

Once again it was Victor Valdes who produced the two defining moments for Barca in the 2nd Leg.

FC Barcelona won their first Trophy under Tata Martino following a goal less draw against Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou. Neymar's first leg away goal proved crucial in what turned out to be a rather tough two legged affair.
